If water is not limiting, you may also want to consider dumping more frequently- in which case you should probably waste some extra water to get the tank fuller for dumping.
And, by the way, leaving the gray drain open does not cause black tank odor. It is OK to leave that open, though some will hotly disagree and cite their reasons (which may be valid too).
