thanks all - memorial day is to remind us of those who are not with us, best thoughts - i'll run it on gas and switch to shore power when we hook up - we just got back our tt form the dealer for fridge problem - it wouldn't switch to ac. side note: gmac insurance was quick to replace awning that was tore up, minimal paper work and hassle. -finally- has anyone been to the koa in banning,ca?

We travel every July from Sac Ca to Florence Or towing our TT and many times the temp is over 100 and most of the time I have the ref off. When we get there after about 10 hrs the ice cream is still frozen and the beer is cold. Why use propane if not needed?

If it's only a couple 3 hours, I wouldn't even worry about running it.

Here's what I do for almost ever trip:

Pre cool it by running it at home prior to loading.

Freeze a couple half gallon milk jugs full of water to put in the frig when I leave to help keep it cold.

OR

Pre Freeze anything I can to help the frig maintain it's temp. Steaks, Hamburger, metts, hot dogs, etc get frozen at home in the chest freezer then loaded in the frig just before leaving.

If the frig isn't opened and you get it down to the mid-high 30's and follow one of these, you'll be fine for a all day travel trip. I've gone from Chattanooga to Cincy this way in one day with the temp still below 45 when I got home. this was in July with outside temps in the 90's.

Multi day travels, I run on propane but I figure why do it if it's not needed.

I'll try to turn a negative to a positve here because I see this thread spiraling in the wrong direction.

The OP asked the question on propane. I would say that the lesson learned here is that one should do an inspection of the flu and all the "open" access panels before heading out on the road and using propane. It is safe, but not maintenance-free.

We did an east coast trip (Toronto to Nova Scotia and back). 3 weeks on the road, 4,000 kms (2,500 miles). Ran the fridge on propane while travelling. No problems.

Our destination is 2 hours also and i just turn it off right when i leave.....i haven't had a problem with food getting hot for just the 2hours

if you have a TT, then you probably have a 2-way fridge. either propane or 110vAC but not on 12vDC.
so, your only choice is to run it on propane(which the majority of RV'ers have no problem doing) or you cool it the night before and get to the campground before it warms up.
