Full time rv living

Hello, I'm looking for some help I know NOTHING about RVing. My husband and I are looking to buy an RV and live out of it for a year while we save money to buy property and build a home. We live in NE OHIO so we get some cold weather, we also have 2 kids. My question is can you hook up a travel trailer to a home? Would we need to have an electrician run a special line? How would we go about water and sewage . is this feasible for a family of 4?

  • I'm 2x with Downtheavenue on this one. You aren't planning "RVing" but seek to live in trailer in a harsh winter climate....with two kids. And in a one year period you plan to buy an RV, save money, buy land and build a house? No way!
  • If you are thinking of living in an RV say on a spot along side a house, like your relative, yes, that's possible. I ran a 30 amp outlet behind our garage for visitors.

You could run a hose from the house and have water. Your camper would have separate tanks for grey and black waste water. They'd require frequent emptying.

Insulation is poor in campers. They are cramped at first. Later, with children, suffocating IMHO.

You'd use a lot of propane, not cheap when filling small tanks.

My wife and I have lived for four to five months in our 36 footer with all the amenities and no need to pinch pennies. And good weather. We're always glad to return home in spring.

I think it's not a good plan for your family. Your expenses would almost certainly be higher than you think. Where are you staying now? If you've sold your home or are in an expensive apartment, a

cheaper apartment would be a better choice.

    Good luck, whatever you decide.
  • With all due respect, your idea is nuts. First, RV living is not cheap. Second, RV living in extreme cold is a challenge for experienced RVers, and novices with children should not consider it. Third, your learning curve is gigantic, and with kids and extreme cold weather could make for a life threatening situation.
