Our 30 foot trailer weighs about 7400 lbs empty and 8500 when loaded. Our payload on our f250(gasser) is 2900 and we have also carried an atv in the bed while trailering, I would look for the most payload you can find. Often a gasser will have more than a diesel.
As to your original question, a 30 foot trailer should be very comfortable for two with plenty of room to spare. 15,000 is a reasonable budget for a nice used unit several years old. As someone stated earlier, Jayco makes a nice mid range product.
