Furnace burning off stuff?

New 2016 RV - had it for almost 3 weeks now.

First time we had the furnace running, it really smelled, and set off the smoke alarm in the middle of the night. Figured it had to work some stuff out of the system before we could use it.

After a couple of times of using it, it got better, but still smelled like something was burning off. Luckily it didn't set the smoke detector off, but it woke me up in the middle of the night and I couldn't go to sleep until it had run its course.

I thought that part of the problem was that we were still driving it around and maybe picking up some dirt. So I figured this week when I get setup I am going to open the doors, the vent, and turn it up to 80. Let it burn everything off.

Did that, it definitely got that same smell. It's been warm and now we hit a cold day and sure enough it starts off by smelling like something is burning. I opened the cabinet, and nothing looks bad.

Will this continue on? It freaks me out to be honest. Or does it always smell 'burney' when starting up?

Is there an air intake somewhere or a filter that maybe needs to be replaced?
  • I can't tell you for your specific setup if/when the smell will go away. I can tell you that I too had that problem for a few trips. Everytime it got better. I don't have any smell now.
  • the dealer should have informed you that the oils need to be burned off before using the furnace for camping.
  • It will get better with time. They all do that so just run it with the windows open to ventilate and expect to go through at least one tank of propane.
  • It sounds like ours at first. Now if it hasn't been run in a while (six months) we get dust smell out of it. As for a filter ours doesn't have one. I think they all should have one. Plus easy to be able to replace too.
  • The first new trailer I bought was 39 years ago and it had a burning smell from the furnace that didn't go away. I did some exploratory surgery and found the owners/installation manual laying atop the furnace. The suckers could have killed us! I mentioned this to another owner of a similar trailer and he looked and found the same thing.

Some odors are common when new or after a storage period, but with the careless assembly common in the industry, don't sleep in a trailer till you are sure of the cause.
