generator on back bumper

Hi all, as before my trailer 1997 KZ 25'. I thought I was doing fine.
put a hitch on my bumper with 2". got a small bumper carrier 19"x 48"
put my champion 3500/4000 on it. Everything was working great, till someone said the bumper wouldn't stand up to it. I'll say the generator weights about 100lb and the carrier 50lbs. now I am worried
that I will be going down the road and loose my trailer back bumper.
is this what some are doing? I am sure not the first. just want to be right and not hurt anyone. can anyone help? thanks and safe camping.

  • It can be done successfully however you will need to weld the rack to the frame. You may also need to beef up your frame to ensure it is stable enough to handle the additional weight.
Lastly you need to consider how the additional weight on the rear will effect your tongue weight. You will need to adjust your cargo to maintain the proper TW.

I had a nice enclosed genset set up on the rear of my prior TT that worked out very well.

Yes, some people here are doing that. There was a post with a picture here some time ago that I wish I had bookmarked. The poster said he always looked down on those that said it was a bad idea. He then posted a picture of his grill and bumper on the road and said he now realized it WAS a bad idea. It took a lot of guts to make that admission.
  • Get a 2" receiver attached to the frame.
It is not so much the weight but the twisting leverage that will tend to have the bumper break at the frame welds.
I carried a few bikes on the bumper for a few years. When we got some nicer bikes and rust etc was accumulating I went ahead and had a receiver welded to the frame. Much stronger.
You might get away with a suitcase generator sitting on top of the bumper but hanging off the back is playing with your luck. Some bumpers are better attached than others but still.

First, carrying anything with gasoline in it on your rear bumper, IMHO is NOT a very good idea. Getting rear ended could end up as a real disaster with gasoline spilled instead of just a minor incident.

I make a point to NEVER have any flamable liquid on my rear bumper carrier.

Second, that "bumper" is really a "sewer slinky holder". Most bumpers, unless reinforced aren't designed to take anything other than what is on the bumper from the factory. Most of the bumpers, aren't even tubing, but folded sheet metal with a spot or seam weld on the edge.

Many folks have had trouble with a 30lb bicycle hanging off the bumper, let alone a 100lb generator.

Add the fact that the weight is hanging off the bumper and makes a big lever arm, isn't good either. My advice, w/o reinforcement to the bumper, you may end up with bumper problems.

I cut my factory bumper off, along with the attaching tubes, then welded 2" ID receiver tubing onto the I beam frame. Then I built a slide in/out bumper tray using 4.5"x4.5"x 3/16" tubing for the bumper and welded on 2" OD stingers to the bumper to let it slide in/out of the reciever tubing. Then I built a expanded metal rack that drops in between the trailer back and bumper to store stuff on.

Now I have a real bumper and storage tray.
