That's how I budget it as well. Basically if I'm going somewhere that is 500 miles away, it will cost me about $500 to go there and back. Based on .50/mile and 8mpg.
At an average of $1/mile that you are being quoted. I would expect half of that to be fuel costs. The other half would be yours, but then you have to return back. And then if it requires overnight stay, etc...
