Hello from Austin, TX!

Girlfrend and I just bought a 2005 open road by pilgrim 5th wheel! We are physical therapists and are planning to go full time in the fifth wheel while traveling from assignment to assignment.

I am here to learn all I can as we are hitting the road in February! I am very new to this as I have never camped in more than a tent trailer using a 5 gallon bucket as a toilet!

Just wanted to introduce myself!
  • Go camping a few weekends before you hit the road to make sure there are no problems and to get used to operating everything in the rv. Good luck to you and enjoy!
  • Welcome, Duck, from a native Texan that has happily transplanted herself in Tennessee. Congratulations on your new RV. You will find a treasure trove of information when you search the archives & you will find topics that you'd never even pondered in the active threads. Like you, I am a newbie and the information I glean from this site is like manna from heaven. If you haven't already, check out the subset of Escapees that refer to themselves as XScapers. Like you, they are young professionals that have chosen to embrace the RV lifestyle prior to retirement.

Good luck to you & be safe!
  • Go South to San Antonio to Travelers World RV resort for a weekend to try everything out and get accustomed to the workings, they have full hookups so you can practice dumping, they have pull-troughs and back ups, best spots are along Av "B" backups along the wall on the golf course nice and quiet.

Before you start travelling go to an empty parking lot and practice going in reverse as if you are going to park the rig in a backup situation, you and the girlfriend need to do this so that you both are comfortable, purchase some walky-talky's to communicate instead of shouting, always make wide turns to the right and you are allowed to go on the opposite side to make a turn, always wide turn both sides.

Most important purchase an air compressor and slinky hose with a tire pressure gage, it is very important that tires have the correct inflation pressure, specially the trailer unit, also make a list of what you have to connect and disconnect, and in what order and before moving do a walk around to make sure everything is as it should be.

This is close to Austin, and if you forgot or need something from home you are close enough to run and get it, if not there is a Camping World at:

3891 Interstate 35 Frontage road, New Braunfels, TX 78130 Tel 1-888-426-4511

Always dump black tank first and then grey and have enough water in black to flush al solids out, do not leave black tank valve open while in camp, you want as much liquid in to dump otherwise you will have the dreaded poop pyramid.

Hope it helps, we all started not knowing what to do and very excited to have a new RV, enjoy and welcome, any further questions we will be happy to assist if we can.

  • Welcome. Do some driveway camping and spend as much time in the new rig to get familiar with things. Read about waste tank management, learn how to back the rig up. Even though its going to be your home don't try to load it up with everything you own. Use this to downsize and learn to travel lite. This site is truly a wealth of info and people here are most willing to help with questions on most anything you could ask. Visit here often.
