Help with 1996 Jayco Designer

Bought a 1996 Jayco Designer a couple months ago from a guy who had it permanently parked at an RV campground. We are going to be moving it soon for the first time. Is there anyone out there that has or has had one of these? Need to know where the 12v battery is located, also getting ready to operate the slide out for the first time...very nervous and would like some reassurance. Just got a copy of the owners manual and it said something about "travel bars"???have no idea what these are or what they look like.

HELP

  • Both Jayco 5'th wheels we owned had the batteries in separate keyed compartments on the side near the water heater, not up front.
  • It sounds like you have an issue with 12volt as the stove vent fan, bathroom fan and a few other things run on this. Not sure how to direct you to check on this but someone else should or an RV tech should be able to tell you if it is a fuse, battery related or what.
  • Handle on ceiling is to crank up TV antenna, ring allows you to turn the antenna, I am guessing marking recommends turning antenna so marking is north to have the antenna aligned so that it picks up the best.
  • thank you all so much. New tires are coming this weekend, thought the tongue was where the battery should be but it is missing...glad it shouldn't be difficult to replace. glad to know also that these travel bars should also be easy to replace if not found. We have been staying there every other weekend for the last couple months so everything is sound except for a few small things, a couple wall outlets don't work and dirt dobbers set up house in the vent-a-hood...cleaned it out but it no longer works...light does, fan doesn't. the vent fan in the bathroom no longer works as well.
lol there is one more mystery...there is some handle on the ceiling near the door that says something about pointing north???
  • Check the different bin and storage areas if you don't find a batt you should be able to find the battery cables.
  • Travel bars are bars that go between inside face of slideout and wall when slideout is retracted for travel.

    Purchase or make your own.
Closet pole rod cut to fit tight with rubber stoppers on each end

    As mentioned...TIRES
and lube up those slideout seals so they don't tear when moving slide
    (303 Protectant ......silicone spray)

And you will need a good fully charged battery to operate slides, provide power for trailer brakes (if rig should come unhooked in tow) plus any 12V DC devices

    Battery location...
If this is a 5th wheel....probably in front compartment
If this is a travel trailer......should be on front tongue

And I would bet those brakes are rusted up.
  • Tires, tires tires. You will need new tires if these have been parked and/or are over six years old. The slides should be checked for proper lubrication. I am not sure what travel bars are either. I would be sure someone who has had an rv comes along with you. Go through the unit and update what needs to be updated; batteries, propane, tires, check the jacks, landing gear, appliances, chedk for leaks. Most likely the black tank will need a good cleaning to be sure you have rid it of any paper pyramid. (seach this site for information on that) Jayco builds a good unit and hopefully this has been taken care of and you will enjoy the RV.
