Regarding costs: The DW and I started out looking at an older DP, a Beaver Marquis. What a wonderful rig, who wouldn't want to own it? I was interested enough to take it Freightliner, spent $400 to have them take a look at it. Got the report back, was at home going over it with the wife. Among other things, air filter: $250. Not installed. I said "Honey, there's a reason everybody don't own one of these things."
Got a friend with a Winnebago, just spent $800 for an alternator. Nearly every time he goes out it's something. You're gonna run into that no matter what kind of rig you got, but DP's are EXPENSIVE.
So, anyway, your money, your choice :)
This was another thing that factored in to our decision to get a class C that is built on a van chassis. I am able to do most of the work on it myself. I don't even think I could lift an 11-22.5 tire.
