What are the ages of your kids? Yes, fancy "resort" type campgrounds are expensive, but they also can have a lot to offer - pools, playgrounds, planned activities, rental equipment (bikes, kayaks, etc), and more.

Overnighting in a parking lot is very cost efficient, but there will be nothing for your kids to do except sleep - which may be fine if you are just trying to get somewhere and need a rest.
