Nothing like experience & applying a little basic marine navigation tricks to get yourself lined up & in position. A boater can take bearings from points on land to know where he is. Likewise by using our mirrors we can line up side to side & use a point on the truck such as tailgate top & where it is in relation to a mark or part of the front of the trailer. Some of the other methods mentions are pretty ingenious too.
With my 5er I cannot see the 5th wheel hitch. Between crew cab & box fuel tank the hitch is out of sight. Can't even see it in the mirror. Lining up is all about side mirrors & knowing how high the pin must be as it comes across the scooped out tailgate center, which I can see.
The semi truckers have even less. All they have are side mirrors to line up.
