I only drain mine at the end of the season. If you are worried about freeze damage, it would be a good idea to continue to drain it.
Are you opening the low point drains to the fresh water system? If so, and you open an inside faucet as well as the pressure relieve valve on the water heater, it will drain that way as well. Just takes longer.
