I drain after every trip because I almost always pick up water from somewhere that precipitates sulfur compounds when heated.
A trick I learned that works for my rig: I open a hot water low point drain under the shower, and the pressure relief valve on the water heater. This removes most of the hot water and brings pressure down to atmospheric so there is not as much of a mess when I remove the drain plug.
This is Atwood, may not work for Suburban, and requires a low point drain in the hot water system.
One caution with this method. Flipping the pressure relief valves can cause them to not seat properly and shorten their lifespan.
