How can we clean our tanks while driving?

We are not beginners, but thought this might be a good place for this question.

We are about to take a 16 hour trip and would like to thoroughly clean our black and grey tank sensors. Both tanks have a 41 gallon capacity. The idea is to empty and flush the tanks before we leave, fill them part way with fresh water and other things, drive for 16 hours to slosh the mixture around in the tanks and over the sensors, then empty the tanks at our destination.

So, here are the questions:

Should we fill them about half full, 20 gallons, or a third, 12 gallons, or what is recommended?

What should we add to the mixture? Soap, what kind, water conditioner? Softener? Any thing else?

Any suggestions for this process would be appreciated.

  • I drop in 2 dishwasher disolvable packets before every trip. They don't suds up but they sure do clean! If they can clean off backed on lasagna, then they should be able to clean off the tank sensors. And they do. I've never had a problem with them. I also do the same for my gray water tank.
  • We use a bag of ice (for roughage) and water and Dawn dish soap to slosh the black tank while driving.

I do the same thing when I know I am travelling to a full hook up site. I will take a few buckets of warm water with a little dish soap in it and dump it down the toilet, let it slosh all around as I drive and then rinse it out once I get to my site. For me 10 gallons is enough to clean off the sensors.

  • I would use Happy Camper Extreme. It is specifically made for cleaning the tanks. You will need one container for each tank. You put the container into he tank, fill it to half, and then drive around for while and dump when you get to your destination. Many people have had success with it.

We also use the regular Happy Camper in the black and grey tanks regularly.
