After reading your post, it got me to thinking about your goal. If your goal is to enjoy the quality time raising your kids, tent camping at a low cost is a good start. If it is for seeing the country as a family, RVing in comfort has it's advantages. For us, we started camping when the kids were babies and has continued since. Our quality time was fishing, swimming in lakes and rivers, sitting around the campfires, enjoying nature, and the like.
RVing has been evolving over the years. Our favorite Forest Service campgrounds that were always full during the summer weekends, are now barely used anymore - except for the fishing areas. But the RV parks are packed.
