How Do You fill LP Tanks?

I just bought a Puma 23FB with two 30 lb LPG tanks. RVW does not fill them and I will need to get them filled. I pickup the TT on 12/29.

Is there a safe and recommended method to have the tanks filled?

Do I remove the tanks from the TT and take them to a LPG service station? I would plan on laying them down on their side and securing them together so that they don't roll around in the back of my SUV.

Or, do I take the TT to the LPG service station with the tanks in place and have them filled in place?

I don't want to do something that's illegal or dangerous.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks.

  • Some people will tell you not to put them in your SUV. You aren't supposed to put LP tanks in the passenger compartment.
Sometimes they fill them at the campground, sometimes at the hardware store. I have had them filled without removing them and I have put them in my Excursion.

We've made that a condition of sale on EVERY RV we've ever bought from a dealer: when we take delivery all fuel tanks are full - we haven't been refused yet! They've got enough profit margin built in to the deals that they can afford it...
  • A lot of equipment rental places will refill propane tanks as well as some RV parks.
  • We have a spare tank and replace and refill. Never do the propane tank exchanges. I once got a tank that was expired and could not be refilled. So did one last exchange and got a neweer tank
  • I remove the tank and go to a propane dealer when I can.
Regular service station if needed on the road. NEVER exchange.

...and the first "purge" and refill will cost more than a normal refill.

  • Remove from trailer
Transport upright.......especially after filling (Relief valve issue)

NEW cylinders.......then they need to be 'purged' first before first fill.
Take to a BULK propane dealer to have them purged and filled.

Milk crates are great for transporting. They will fit inside and can easily be strapped down.

    OR

You can tow trailer to BULK propane dealer and have them take care of it

    Call and verify prior.
  • You take them out and bring them to any LP gas dealer.
I keep mine upright and just use some bungees to keep them from tipping.
