I would say you have to decide that question for yourself. For me, I would spend the $1200 and keep the 8 hours of driving time for myself. For $2K or $3K I'd drive. I have a lot of commitments in my life; I would love to have 8 extra hours one day to do whatever I want to do for me. How much do you value the 8 hours? And keep in mind, an email doesn't substitute for a valid contract.
