How to find RV parks

What tools do you use to find RV parks? What criteria do you look for to help make sure you end up in a safe location? Do you plan ahead and reserve your spots or do you show up and hope for vacancy?
  • We use a combination of things. We plan our trips using MS Streets and Trips. You can find lots of RV parks with the program. We search on the internet. Use the Woodalls search. Check reviews on rvparkreviews.com and check on Google Earth to see what they look like from above and their surroundings. Also, check to see if the park has a website and see what info (photos and list of amenities and things to do in the area) they have to offer. We almost always make reservations in advance.
  • I can't speak for everyone, but I personally use the Good Sam Club website to lookup campgrounds and you can pick what criteria your looking for in a campground. I have found it to be very useful. Depending on the time of year and which direction your headed on your trip? If your headed towards the beach during the summer months, you had better have a reservation, especially on a holiday weekend or you more that likely won't be staying there. I typically research the area that we will venture to and find a campground that best meets our needs and then make a reservation. If you like adventure? You could always show up and hope for a spot other than a Walmart parking lot..

    Happy RV'ing
  • The ultimate printed guide used to be Woodall's, which is now published as the Good Sam Guide and is available at Camping World. $10 if you are a GS member; $25 otherwise, but worth every penny. It is about the size of a big city phone book and list basic info on thousands of campgrounds. Some is more accurate than others, but it is generally correct.

The "modern" way is to go to {www.rvparkreviews.com} and enter a target city. Keep in mind that only parks that have been reviewed by users are listed and obviously some reviewers have an ax to grind. Throw out the "best" and "worst" reviews and consider the rest of them as average. I like to then go to Google Earth and see what the surrounding landscape looks like.

There are a couple of I-pad aps for locating RV parks.

    Have fun out there.
