How to make a quick trip when you don't have time to drive

I work the usual M-F and can take vacation but it's difficult to take more than a few days off at a time. I just purchased a mini truck camper (Capri Camper Cowboy). This is for weekend getaways to fish lakes at state parks, etc.

I don't want to take a short vacation of say five days including the weekend and spend a lot of time driving. I live in Northwest Arkansas and want to visit the Rockies. Southeast Colorado is about a 12 hour drive, so that's too long.

My question - I can fly to Colorado Springs or Pueblo and rent a car but then what? I guess I could just rent a hotel or try to get a cabin and do some hiking and general exploring.

I know I can rent a truck camper in the Denver location of Cruise America, but that starts getting complicated on pickup/drop off times and cost more.

Any advice on how to put together a hassle free get away?

Yes. But you can't HAVE your cake and EAT it too.

Keep your "mini" trips closer to home.
  • I have a 9-5, M-F job and during camping season we simply go to destination points within a reasonable driving range. Sometimes, (almost always) that means Friday evening, Saturday, and returning home on Sunday. On those week-ends we pick destination points that are within 2 hours of home so we are not on-the-road so much.

Occasionally, we'll take an extra Friday or Monday off work and that will enable us to drive a couple hours farther. And that's pretty much all we can expect.

We have our regular paid days off work, and when we take time off, we plan longer trips, farther drives, and no two are ever the same. We've traveled straight to the destination point and sometimes we take a few days to reach the destination point, making smaller destination points every day of the trip.

Time will dictate how far you can travel. If you really need or want those destination points out of reach of a reasonable drive, they flying is your other option.

However, something to consider: The time it takes to fly could take you actually longer than the time it takes to drive. Why? when you consider the time from when you leave home to the airport, park the car, check in, wait for the flight, board the plain, fly, reach your destination, get your baggage, rent another vehicle, it would would have been less time to just drive it.

But, flying and renting is about your only other option. Otherwise, you just have to accept the fact, some things are out of reach and you'll need to work out a way to do it somehow, or sometime else.
