I am a goggler, I put in my home, my ultimate destination and then the stops in between that are must sees. I don't always follow that route but it does give me the fastest way or in my case, freeway and toll road free. Then, once I have an idea about the best route, I look at a map and decide how far I want to drive each day, 400 miles is just about my limit and prefer less. I make reservations for places like Yellowstone but for the other stops, I usually just call the morning before to see if they have room and make reservations then. That gives me the freedom to adjust as I go along because I might wake up and want to spend another night at XX, or I might feel like only driving 100 miles that day.
