I stumbled across this forum today and I am excited

The wife and I bought a new TT a couple of years back and have been enjoying it. Now we are in the market for a 5th wheel. Makes me wish I knew then what I know now.

I was researching the Jayco Pinnacle rear leaving 5th Wheels. I cannot wait to start reading some of these threads to compare. I am interesting in what to look for other than aesthetics.

I read something about a second basement. I didn't know they came with basements. I am guessing that is the through storage underneath. Also, I am interesting in finding out what other amenities to look for. I have inquired about central vac and self leveling systems, but what else should I look for?

Thanks,

John

  • Don't get too hung up on what your truck can tow, be more concerned what it can CARRY. You won't know what numbers to crunch until you consider what trailer you might be interested.

  • I think I was a bit vague. I am looking in the 50 to 65k range. I am very specific in my floor plan. I was asking more about the quality of the unseen items. Like frames, walls, roofs. I do not know what ammenties r available and that is what I am after. Jayco does a great job bragging about their roof system and how it can hold 3 or 4k pounds. Do I need a roof that well constructed? Jayco also brags about their 4 seasons weather proof and has a video explaining it.

But what else should I expect for amenities in that price range?

I don't plan on buying until sometime next year.

    I have a 2015 F350 SRW.it can pull up to 16k.

Thanks all for ur advice. I search the internet almost daily. Today I found a Heartland that would work well. It looked as good at the Jayco but CW near me said they r droping heartland because of quality issues. What does that mean?
  • I think "it" starts with searching the internet. Do a search on RV manufacturers and start drilling down the pages to see what they have. Look at the floor plans, then Google Search for that make and model of camper and click on "images" and you'll begin to see what's popular, what you like, and what you don't.

Then, after a while, you'll need to actually go and visit different dealerships that sell those make and models. You will, at first, begin to eliminate those campers you don't like, floor plans that don't work for you, ones that are too expensive, and your choices what's left will begin to narrow down.

I don't think it's the right time of year for RV shows, they are usually held between November and March, so dealerships are your best source to visit during this time of year right now.

Eventually, you'll narrow down a small handful of models, and then you'll need to do the math. Can your tow vehicle to it comfortably? What are the insurance options? Financing or paying cash? These types of things need to be factored in and will also drive your final decision.

Or, just go visit dealership, and when you step into the right one, you might have that "AH HA!" moment and you leave towing it behind your truck!
  • Welcome, you have come to the right place as there are people in here who have been doing this stuff a very long time. CW is a great place to shop too.

I bought an older FW with box frame so if I was shopping for new I would be interested in seeing the frame design. From there I would probably want to research the different slide mechanisms. Do you have enough truck?
  • Welcome John! I suggest a field trip to an RV show. You don't really know what you want until you see it sometimes! Have fun out there!
