You will need a house battery to run the DC circuit board for the fridge. Doesn't matter if you are plugged in or not.
Some folks have, at one time, been "Well off" and then suffered an odd numbered financial reversal. As it happens I'm one of them but thanks to owning a Motor home, (And getting rid of the Sticks and Bricks) I am recovering nicely and well on my way to an Even numbered Financial Reversal (Even numbers is when you are well off again) All my credit cards are paid off, cut to shreds and accounts closed, and I now pay CASH for everything, thus helping to keep things on the positive side of the ledger.
So perhaps he had money, and now its tight. Happens to some.
Oh, so you know, I replaced my batteries last spring.. Cash, No problem.. But had it happened say 2 years ago.. it would have been Tight, I'd still have gotten it done, but It would have been tight.
my daughter's father in law payed cash for everything for decades. He now can't afford his rent and wanted to buy a house. Nope. No credit. He's stuck in an apartment he can't afford, because they keep raising rents. You might keep a credit card going just in case you need credit.
