No you have been doing it right. TH mode just changes your shift points and lets the motor pick up a few more RPM's before shifting. Also a lot of the newer rigs will only downshift the trany for you when the TH is activated. Running the rig in TH when towing or not towing will not hurt a thing. I will use TH in heavy stop and go traffic just to have the extra stopping of the tranny downshifting if I need it or while running empty in the mountains so I have the extra power and less shifting.
How does all of this effect transmission temperature?
