They want you committed to buying by taking your $1000, then they will spring some surprises on you. A fee for this, a fee for that, if you want this then its going to cost more, etc. I NEVER give up any $$$ until I check out the product carefully and fully, and have the entire deal in front of me. If they want my money, they have to do what I want. I've walked away from car and RV dealers who tried to add in fees on the final deal.
One of my best ones was when I was buying a F250 new. We agreed on a price for the trade-in, the sales price is a non-negotiable item because it was a Ford A Plan deal ($11,000+ under sticker), and they printed out the deal on a sales invoice. I noticed there was a doc fee on it. Sorry folks, this is a Ford A Plan, and Ford prohibits any additional fee on an A Plan. "Oh yeah, that's right...", and they re-do the deal taking off that $250 doc fee. I look at the amended deal, and the sales tax didn't look right. Got out a calculator and checked it. It was $250 too high. When I asked about that, the sales manager said it was for the federal gas-guzzler tax. Sorry again folks, there is no gas-guzzler tax on Super Dutys. I asked them if I needed to call Ford Dearborn HQ and tell them what was going on, and they said there is no need for that, we'll get it right next time. And they did.
Don't deal with underhanded people like this. There are plenty of good dealers out there.
