just hard to get a RV dealer to take your money

(posted in beginning RVing that category said tricks or tips...and I need some)

It is just hard to get a RV dealer to take your money anymore!!!

Tomorrow (Fri which might be today for many) we’re either coming home with it or no deal.

Monday afternoon…wife comes home and says that she has found what she wants and I need to look. I agree to look Tuesday. She has been looking for something bigger than our small class C. I have quit looking with her because getting tired of all the BS dealing with sales people. But it seems I’m caught up in it again.

We have an x-rental (Majestic) that is perfect for traveling in. I love the little thing but spending lots of time in it would get very small very fast. We spent a three weeks straight in it last year and decided that staying put for longer length of times we (she) should get something bigger.

Tuesday… I take a look and I like. My last words with sales guy were; plug in everything and turn on everything, we’ll be back tomorrow to make sure everything works. If it checks out we’ll buy it.
What could be more clear?

Wed… Arrive at dealer. Nothing is plugged in, nothing is turned on. Sales guy says if you give us a $1,000 deposit we’ll hold it for you.

I say that’s interesting if you would of done what we agreed upon yesterday and turned everything on, and if everything checked out, we would go pick up cashiers check, what could be more simple?

Sales guy says he talked with his boss and if we want it to give them a $1,000 deposit they'll start the deal. Once our deposit and offer has been “accepted” (their terms)they will look at trailer from head to toe and then we’ll “go from there”.

My question to him is "what is go from there”? He says after we give deposit and offer they will take trailer to their shop and will check out everything and that is where we will do the paperwork.

Sales guy writes up offer to purchase and deposit of $1,000. I write on the offer…subject to buyers approval of inspection of total trailer by Fri (tomorrow or today for many reading this) Sales guy calls his boss and wants to know if he can accept offer like this.

His boss sets up with a time for us to meet and tells me over phone to think about buying a warranty "to save us money". I say "look you would have had a cashiers check in your hand by now if your sales guy would of done what they agreed to”. He goes on about why I need his new hitch and controller. I know mine is from the 90's and old but still works, and if my leveling bars are on the light side I’ll buy some bigger ones, but maybe not from you. He talks some more trying to smooth over any (their) misunderstandings with his new sales guy.

They can talk all they want (Friday) but if rv doesn’t check out I’m not buying. NOT going in "halves" on new frig or a/c should it need one. Not paying for PDI (who would do that?) Very Simple if it doesn’t check out to our approval we are not buying.

Here is my question...

What is this dealer up to? Why are they playing with us?

Hmmmmmm..... Used rig right? I'm sure there are issues that the dealership has not dealt with yet, as there would be with most any used rig. Typically the dealership will not "go through it" until there is a solid potential sale (a.k.a. a deposit).

While YOU have full intention of buying the rig without a deposit showing intent, I can understand why the dealer is skeptical. For every real buyer like you, there are 50 others who have no such solid intent of buying and the dealer isn't about to spend time and money prepping the rig for nothing.

Your notation on the offer was completely reasonable. The dealer's attempt at up-selling warranties and add on's is typical. All you need to do is stand firm on both issues.

Selling RV's is much like selling cars, only 100X worse. There are way more tire kickers than buyers in RV sales, compared to autos. It makes the process more frustrating for BOTH sides of the deal.

    X2

Parts of this scenario reminds me of trying to rent one of my properties. Lots of start up enthusiasm followed by missed showings and/or no money. A deposit for an RV contingent on approval is much like the refundable application fee charged in real estate; separates the wheat from the chaff.
Sorry, the original salesperson didn't make the cut yet it sounds as if the manager knows his business even to asking you about items you've no interest in. That's his job and you've already done your own by adding on to the contract.

Here's hoping all goes well today.

Normal operating procedure. Dealers get many tire kickers that waste their time looking at units with no intention or ability to buy. They are requiring a deposit (earnest money in real estate terms) to insure that you are a serious buyer before they invest time and resources.

I don't think they are trying to do anything other than sell an RV and maybe some accessories. They just want proof that you are a serious buyer and not wasting their time.

x2. Something is probably wrong with the unit.

Despite finding what both your wife and you like, if this was me, I would have walked out as soon as he asked for a $1000 deposit and started back looking at other dealers.

This dealer has signaled too many negatives. Give us a deposit. After the deposit we will make sure it is worth buying? No way! And then he says, buy a warranty - sure he wants the money for that too and is saying he won't stand behind what he is selling you. He knows what he has - and it has problems. He just does not want you to know that until the very last minute when he thinks you won't walk out.

Yep, to many negatives. Tomorrow is last day they have. It has gone on this far because of the condition of trailer.
  • Tom/Barb...
I smell a Paulsbo run run runaway.

    No, but your pretty close.

Walk in and ask if they take cash? if they say yes, tell them too bad the trailer isn't ready and walk out.
It will be a grand now, a thousand later and on and on.

    That is a good one.

Believe it or not the first sales guy that wife talked to on Monday said price was $2,700 higher than sales guy on Tues day. That's $2,700 a day, price should really be good by Fri.

I'll disclose seller after we come home either with or without trailer late Fri.
