Your battery bank (a.k.a., house batteries) will supply lower power usage appliances like t.v., computer, lights, etc. which will prevent you from having to run your generator. If you are truly trying to experience nature, you are not going to want to have a generator running all the time. But when you need to run your a/c unit you will need to fire up the generator. As yes, it is ok to run your generator while you are driving down the road to power your house a/c unit.
When your house batteries get low (if you're boondocking) you will need to fire up the generator to recharge them for the next nights electrical needs.

P.S. One other thing... If you are plugged into an electric site at a campground it will supply your elctrical needs and should never have to start your generator to power appliances.
