I had the exact same experience, for the same reasons, as enblethen's wife. I feared driving our prior Class C. But I drive our Class A with no problem. A Class A can feel like a big lumbering giant going down the road, so you do have to get used to it. A Class C probably not as much because you are seated in the cab/van section.
Regarding prices in "the South"...Perhaps it's supply and demand. A lot of snowbirds likely sell their coaches while in the south and either buy a newer one or stop RVing.
I would also try to bump up your budget to 20-25K and have a maintenance budget too!
I like to buy from a private owner, because it's the only way you can really get to know about the past maintenance and the general care of the coach. I talk to the owner A LOT, and use my intuition. Doesn't matter to me if there's been multiple owners, as long as I feel the current owner has taken care of things as they come up. I like to hear that the owner knows about the workings of their coach and that they've done maintenance things throughout the time they've owned it. But that's just me :) Plenty of people buy from dealers. I've purchased 4 motorhomes over the years, 3 of which were on craigslist. And sold 2 on craigslist.
Happy searching!
