I think the renting suggestion was for trying out to see how you like an A or C and size before buying. Perhaps you have friends who would invite you to join them for a weekend to get some experience.
DW and I were lucky and got just the right size with no experience. We did a test drive with a 26 foot C on sale for 60k, which I felt uncomfortable driving in town and DW wouldn't try. On this, one has to think ahead to being a few years older, too. Next we looked at a 20 foot C and I said, "could we manage with this one?" We both drove it - a pleasure - and bought it for 24k (Canadian), as you mentioned knowing at that price we could move up if it didn't work out. Nine years later we still have it and love it. It is a little too small when we have a guest along but now we seldom do. It was a former rental and must have been well maintained because it hasn't seen a garage or RV repair shop so far.
I am very glad to have the small size because we can still go to our favourite rustic campsites, though another four feet wouldn't make much difference on the highway. It strikes me that the bigger the MH the more a towed is needed and pretty soon you are 60 feet long, unwieldly in towns, scary on the highway and looking like a treasure ship to the bad guys.
