I'd combine what tex wardfan and Alabama Jim mentioned. Stay either in your driveway, or a campground if it's only a few miles from home for 2 or 3 days.
With the pen and paper, first write down everything that you pack. After this, write down every thing you find you need when at camp, and don't have.
You are correct to get ideas here and look at other check list you might find on the internet, but remember you will probably have to tailor them to your camping style, etc.
One thing to guard against is "over packing". A lot of folks tend to do this.
