I plan the entire trip in advance. I like knowing I have a reservation for every day of our travels. The advantage of booking in advance is you get your choice of a campsite. I would prefer to cancel if an emergency situation arose. In the last 5 years I've only had to cancel a couple of times. I also plan all my fuel stops in advance. We have a fairly large 5th wheel that is difficult to get into some gas stations.
So far it seems to work OK for us.
I'm also in the planner camp (though we do wing it when strictly heading home a long distance for five days or so, no sightseeing involved. You can always call ahead same day, or drive another 25 miles.)
Sure, you can always find a place to sleep. But I think a wonderful campsite adds a lot to our travels. For most of our long 2+ month) trips, we plan what to see and do, and book the best-located and best-reviewed places I can find through research. Often we camp by the water or in other scenic spots by picking a site way ahead. I really enjoy the planning as part of the trip pleasure.
It always amazes me later to look back realize how many great experiences we had on a trip. I plan in some extra days so there's time for just relaxing in beautiful places, laundry, cleaning the RV, or wiggle room for solving problems that arise.
I find it relaxing to have a printed confirmation in hand for each place, with address for GPS, so when we head onward, we know we already have a good campsite, at most about 300 or so miles ahead. We've only ever had to cancel maybe one or two sites with any fee involved over the past six years.
But I know others don't see the need.
I do think with the economy strong and many baby boomers joining In the RV fun, sites are getting more popular. And I doubt there are lots of RV parks being built to keep up with demand.
