My personal suggestion (as valuable as any free advice), make the important reservations (like Yellowstone) when your plan is set. Make other reservations with as little lead time and you can manage. If you absolutely have to have FHU, that does put you in a bind, but you can still wing it from time to time. That is what cell phones are for. You don't need to carry wire (internet), just the copies of Woodalls, the AAA camping guides (same thing but free to members) or other. That way, when you see some thing, place or attraction and want to stop, you can.
Navigation involves two things, knowing where you are and deciding how to get where you want to be. This is something I have been doing (sometimes as a job) for more than half a century.
Will I make reservations for every stop? No
But I will make them for essential stops that are important for business or personal reasons.
We aren't campers. We are travelers and want to see and experience as much as we can afford with our remaining time and limited resources. For coach travel, I will plan a month long multi-Kmile excursion by the day. I also know that the plan will require revision at least by the end of the third day and maybe sooner.
So, go head and plan. Planning is good, but so is flexibility. If you don't stop to smell the flowers you see, what good is seeing them at all??
