Depends if you're a "planner camper", lol I like that, or realize that "you'll spend the night somewhere."
Our recent experience this summer, TC, 4 of us, 3 1/2 weeks to do Seattle to N WI and back with a week layover in WI.
Note we either boondocked or did NF campgrounds, no hook ups most nights.
Made reservations for Yellowstone and big parks. Make reservations if there's holidays in your trip. Rest of the nights through the mtn west were winging it and NEVER had an issue finding a nice campsite within a short period of time. With a car full of tablets and smart phones you can find every spot to camp within range of you in like 15 min. Takes the need to have the ole atlas highlighted and AAA reservations all in order.
