If you're flying to the West Coast, Yellowstone is still quite a drive.
I'd check out Yosemite and some other areas of the Sierra Nevadas.
Yosemite is my backyard. Tons of wildlife. Deer and bear being the most plentiful. Outside of squirrel anyway!
The coast itself is awesome. Lots of wildlife north of San Francisco in the way of sea lions and deer.
Words of caution:
1. These areas are well sought after spots. Figure it out quick and reserve a spot. I reserved a coastal spot last week for mid July. Spots were already getting low.
2. California is big (if that's what you meant by West Coast. Do the math on drive times. It's much bigger than what most from the East Coast expect. But beautiful country to drive through.
3. Weather. We have it all. June could see you with mid 60s, low 100s, and thunderstorms. All depends on where you're talking.
