Another thought, rather than rent an RV and take it somewhere, is to rent a trailer at an RV park. Most of those will be stocked with pretty much what you need. This will give you a good feel for what's needed without making a huge investment plus you will have a vehicle to drive places. Matt has some very valid points. There's a lot more too it than just driving somewhere. Gear, close quarters, ability to sight-see, age of kids, interests and abilities all come into play. The RV lifestyle is great-some on hear jumped in head first, and some started with tents and pop-ups before upgrading to a large unit. I admire your enthusiasm and wish you all the best but respectfully suggest you do some more review of your plans.
