My DD and SIL chose to travel by car last Christmas to come home and visit, because of their dog. Dog is too big to fly, and would have cost more than another airline ticket to board for the time they were planning to be away from home. They ended up driving 10+ hours for two days with a hotel midway. They have made the drive several times, so knew which hotels would accept their mid-large dog. both nights in the hotel, the dog had a hard time sleeping because of the sounds coming from hallway and adjacent rooms. Since dog was awake, pacing and occasionally woofing (even softly), they were not able to sleep or rest well.
I am hoping that maybe before next year if they haven't managed to transfer south and closer, they can find at least a class B or small C to use for traveling, especially since they will have a baby to deal with too.
