Where do you want to go? If you're thinking about northern national parks the roads into them may be closed - Yellowstone You may have a hard time finding opened campgrounds, public or private. Many other tourist attractions may be closed. Check before you go because you could be very disappointed.
If you're just zipping over to the California coast you should be okay but there are roads where you are required to carry chains during the winter even if you don't need to use them.
I have to agree with everyone who recommends a more southern route. This will give you a chance to stay off of the interstate and see more of the country.
