I live in Montana, and there is no telling when the snow will fly. Ten years ago, our first snow hit Christmas Eve. Other years, we trick or treat in 6 inches of the white stuff.
In any case, Ozlander is correct. The snow usually doesn't hamper traveling very long. Our road departments keep the roads very clear, and you won't need chains. But you may have to stay the night unexpectedly if a mountain pass is closed or impassable.
