I'll add that California does not equal sunshine and sand. Be careful where you plan to cross the Sierras if you're taking a Northern route. Lots of passes on maps are completely shut down for the winter. Usually starting with first snow in mid to late Oct. In the Sierras, 3 days of emergency supplies is a bare minimum, and as mentioned, most passes require you to carry chains regardless of weather.
