The best advice I can offer is, don't be in a hurry to buy your RV. Take your time, look at different types and styles.
I can't advise you which type is best, that is a matter of opinion.
You seem to be interested in Stealth Camping (Google it). Probably your best choice is to convert, or buy a converted work van. They blend in just about anywhere.
It depends on the municipality if you can park on the street or big box store parking lots. There are areas you can boondock, you just have to find them.
Overall I don't thing RVers are looked down on, some places don't want them, just don't go there or give them your business.
Rv's get broken into just like houses. Just be careful of where you park it when it's unattended.
It's not difficult to find places to work on your RV. It's usually best to go to a truck garage or call a mobile RV tech.
Learn to do as many of your own repairs as possible.
What breaks most often? The expensive stuff, of course. It depends on the complexity of your systems and how well they are maintained.
Drinking? I think you are okay if, the engine is not running and you are in the 'living' area of the RV.
But make sure you are parked in an area you are allowed. If you have a drink and are told to move, you can see the problem.
What would I do different? Just what you're doing. Ask LOTS of questions before buying. There is a lot of information and experience available on the forum. Don't hesitate to ask.
And, welcome to the forum you will get good answers and some not so good answers. :)
Take your time, ask questions and you will know what type RV and camping fits your lifestyle.
Enjoy your travels.
