OP, the real question is AC or no AC off the genny.
If you have a small AC 13kbtu or less, you can likely get it to run off of a "good" 2000W generator. If you have a 15k or more, then you're looking at twins or a 3000W genny.
Brand? Idkk about the bargain ones with recongnizable names, like Generac and Briggs, but Honda and Yami are both the top of the line for reliable power and overall reliability. Champion and Predator seem to get mostly good reviews, but they're still cheap construction and china bomb parts compared to the red and blue. This is not debateable. However they work fine for occasional use I'm sure.
Value? That can be looked at a couple ways.
Me, I bought a used Honda 2k about 7 years ago now. Looks like it got drug down the road on a rope, but it had less than 100hrs on it and for the $500 I spent, it's still worth $400-500 today AND it will also last as long as I choose to keep it. We routinely get close to 1000hrs on those at work. Haven't seen one with more than 1000, but they get used, abused, run out of oil, dropped, sit in the rain, etc. Unless they plug from old gas, they generally work.
Personal use where one presumably takes much better care, red or blue will literally be the last one you need to buy.
If budget is a big concern, buy used, ftw. Plenty of gently used ones for a little more than a chinese model and a little less than a new red or blue one.
Direct quote from the Honda website.
"Honda produces approximately 46 thousand compact gasoline generators ranging in capacity from 0.9 – 12 kVA in Japan, China, France, India, Thailand and US and supplies them to North America, Europe and various other countries around the world."
Hmmmm - China bomb parts. :B
