Payload is more important as almost every time, you'll run out of payload capacity before towing capacity.
Truck manufacturers like to wow people with huge towing numbers but you'll never hit that amount before the tongue weight combined with whatever else is in your truck exceeds your payload. Lots of RV salespeople like to use that number as well to try and sell you a TT that's too big for your truck.
Do a lot of research here and elsewhere and make sure your tow vehicle and TT are a good match.
Also, try and filter out the users here who say that a 1/2 ton is a glorified grocery-getter and anything less than a 3/4 ton is for soccer moms.
