The Rams tend to be light on the payload. One thing I found is that you should NOT trust the salesman to tell you the correct trailer weight and payload spec for a given truck. This can vary significantly due to options and the salesmen just pull a number out of their ass to make the sale. Get the correct number from the factory using the available tools. Also the sticker in the doorjam will give you the payload number.
My Ram 1500 has a payload of 1307 lb, more than most hemis even though it is a v6 (because the truck is fairly light). However the max trailer weight is only 4650 lb. If I had the 3.55 or 3.92 axle rather than the 3.21 it would be a couple thousand pounds heavier. As it is I should be ok because I have a light trailer.
