Ram 1500s are a coil spring rear susp. Most of the reason for lighter payload. Sure they make air bags for them though.
Whether you get a 1\2 ton or 3/4 ton should depend on the primary use. If you'll be putting on a lot of towing miles, especially at altitude or big hills you'll appreciate a diesel and a 3/4 ton at that. But if you're going new, a diesel is big bucks.
Both trucks you're looking at will tow the trailer you're thinking about fine though. Personally I'd opt for the Hemi or a Ram1500 diesel. But they are first model year.
