New RVer and new (to me) RV

My wife just retired a few weeks ago from 31 years of teaching and I am semi-retired. We have been talking for several years about doing some traveling and going places that family duties have prevented in the past.

So, we just purchased a 2011 Mercedes Benz RS Aventurous with only 12k miles on it. We will take delivery on Friday. I feel like a school kid counting the days till summer break.

Because I still work part time (architect) we will not be making any long trips. Our plans are to make long weekend trips. From what I have seen and read, the Roadtrek should be a good selection for us. Easy to handle and park, nice ride with comfort and power, and good fuel mileage.

I have been reading this forum for a short while and have already learned quite a bit. I look forward to gaining much more knowledge from experienced RVers.

I just wanted to introduce myself and ask for any guidance that other readers may like to offer. "Happy trails"
  • Thanks for the positive comments. I have been doing a lot of reading and I am looking forward to learning from the experiences shared on this forum.

We took our first trip this past weekend. No camping yet (we stayed at my MIL place) but I did sleep in the RV a couple of nights just to get used to it. The trip was great for learning about the coach and some of the many systems in it. Here are some of my observations:

Positives: I love the way it handles, plenty of power for accelerating into traffic and climbing hills, can get in around any parking lot, has all the amenities we need, and it looks great.

Negatives: The ride was much rougher than I had expected, especially in the rear couch, diesel mileage was lower than I thought it would be (17-18 combined).

All in all, I am extremely pleased!!!
  • Congratulations. I see you have a Sprinter-based chassis by MB. There are several recent (some of them mine) threads here regarding Sprinters. Read your owner's manual thoroughly.

Your MB Diesel V6 Turbo is probably very similar to ours and you should know about engine and transmission oil along with the maintenance schedule. Your unit may use DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) and/or may have a DPF (Diesel Particulater Filter). Check so you know for future reference.

I recently investigated the fuse panels in mine and there are a lot of them.

Search the threads on this forum and you will find a plethora of information and a lot of helpful people.

  • Welcome to the RV family. We owned a Roadtrek for years and loved it. We are without a unit now and encourage you to learn from those on this forum. They have taught me so much about our next step to a full-time 5th wheel.
  • Welcome to the forum and congrats on your MB.
Keep reading the forum, searching and asking questions.
There is lot of info available on the forum.

    Enjoy your travels.
