My advice is to spend a lot of time measuring and thinking things out.
One of the bigger projects I debated for several years was changing our bedroom door, which is always in the way of the bathroom sink, into a slider. I didn't want a hack job and I wanted it to look like it came that way. I evaluated several other plans before diving in and cutting stuff.
It all paid off and it came out perfect but the planning was the key.
