NEWBIE WINTERIZING QUESTION

I did the winterization on my travel trailer with the anti -freeze.One question I have is when I was running water out the faucets before the color turned pink wouldn't that first bit of water sit n the gray water tank and freeze

Sure, but not required 'cause during the process of running antifreeze through the system some of it is obviously going to drain down through the sink / shower traps and into the grey water tank where it will work it's way to the GW waste gate. Same for black water ... as antifreeze is run through the toilet some of it will drop into the black tank below and end up at the BW waste gate. If adding more makes you feel better about it then sure, add more ... but it's not necessary.
  • I usually let the gray and black open to let the water out while the antifreeze pumps through the plumbing. Once I get pink out of all of the faucets I close the valves and dump some antifreeze down the terlet and sinks.

So what? ... there's plenty of room in the tanks for any residual water to expand as it freezes without any cause for concern.

Well...there's room in the tank but the water will flow to the lowest point which is likely the dump valve and pipe leading to it. I would hate for that pipe to burst. I like to put upwards of a gallon of anti freeze in the black and gray tanks with this in mind.
  • The trouble with freezing is the expansion which can burst pipes, fittings, etc. Dumping it would be best, but assuming your gray tank has been dumped there is plenty of room for expansion. Additionally any antifreeze that comes out of the taps while winterizing will will also flow to the tank to aid in preventing freezing.

  • I normally empty and leave my waste tanks open until they have drained completely then close them so small insects can't get inside
  • When I run the pink stuff through my water system, I have my tank valves open and have a bucket at the outlet to dispose of the water. I will close the valves before I dump the pink stuff into the traps at the end of the process.
