Here's why:
12.2 volts is approximately 50% discharged.
Batteries left sitting like that will age faster due to sulfation.
It is not AS much of a problem with deep cycles though.
And is almost no problem at all with AGMs as their rate of discharge is much lower.
Summary: Despite what you believe, if you have any variety of conventional lead-acid wet cell batteries it really is important to keep them fully charged.....or very near to full.
