Newbies Where to Camp?

We're proud new owners of our first travel trailer - a 2012 Keystone Passport 2650BH. We are pulling it with a 2004 5.4L Expedition.

We own a small business and found that, with dogs at home, going on vacation is more of a hassle than it's worth. So we decided a travel trailer would allow us some long weekends and we could take the pups with us.

We're looking for some campgrounds that are within 150-200 miles of Indianapolis. We are in our mid and late 40's and have no children. We have three well behaved (I'm sure everyone thinks that about their own) dogs but will likely only travel with two for the majority of our trips. Do any of you have any suggestions for great campgrounds we should try first? We're looking for more of an amenity-filled campground with trails, shade, big lots as opposed to some of the more amusement, crowd oriented grounds.

By the way, your forums were invaluable to us when we were shopping for our travel trailer. While this is our first post, we're so appreciative of how helpful you all are!

We like to get back in the woods alot so go to the Natl Forest alot. We also have a nice State Park within 25 miles of us so that is our home base camp spot I guess. I usually go there if I have made some mods and want to see how it works out...

I always have a link to this web site when we are traveling to keeps tabs on the camp grounds where we are at.

    RV PARKS and CAMPGROUNDS
  • the BEST "campgrounds" are usually COE parks. MOST have electricity and some water and a few sewer hook ups. Located on lakes and dams built by tax dollars and most have good access to camping activities like swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, biking and even off roading. Reasonably priced and not so "rule heavy" that they require a rule book. check them out at http://www.recreation.gov for locations near you and reservations etc.

If by "camping" you mean RV parks, I can't help you.

    Good luck / Skip
