The OP is in Thailand and will be coming here specifically AFAIK to immediately take off on his trip. I don't see 6 weeks waiting here in the states for a title, etc.

yes, i am coming to the US specifically for this trip and plan to spend a couple of weeks or so in the bay area (my home when i lived in the US) to find a van and get set up.
my son lives there and i'll use his address, so when my new title shows up from the DMV, he'll just fedex it to me at a hotel or someplace, so i guess no issue there.
but on a side note, and maybe this isn't the place to ask, can i register a vehicle with an international driving permit? or would i need to get my old CA license up to date?
UPDATE, i just found this on a San Diego forum
'I have recently moved here from Australia and bought a car, registered and insured it with an international drivers licence. It is definitely possible to do with an international licence, although a lot of the online insurance companies will not give insurance without a CA state licence.' here
but maybe its better to bite the bullet, get a DMV appointment before i leave home and deal with getting a new CA DL
